From the hopeless slums of Philadelphia to the heights of fame, Ethel Waters lived it all. She pulled herself out of a treacherous past to become a Vaudeville success, a recording sensation and a Broadway star. Her reputation for wielding a feisty temper labeled her as a “trouble maker” in the entertainment industry and made it increasingly difficult for her to find work. But after a change of attitude and heart, she found a purpose beyond herself as a performer with the Billy Graham Crusades.
Through it all, there were the songs, the ones that gave her strength and the ones that made her a legend. Now her life takes center stage. This is her incredible story, filled with the greatest hits of a lifetime, including “Stormy Weather” and “Am I Blue?”

On the morning of October 4, 1942, Leokadia Jaromirska, a Polish Catholic woman, was leaving for work when she heard a child crying. She walked toward the sound and found a little girl. She thought to herself, “So many widows and lonely mothers manage to raise children, I can, too.” She hugged the girl close to her heart and took her home.
Thus begins Letters from Leokadia, a stunning story of choice, courage, and love.
Letters from Leokadia is funded through a generous grant from the Tannenbaum-Sternberger Foundation
